Dr. Deniz Yonucu (Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin/Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung)

Crime, Extra-Legal Security and Anti-Politics in Istanbul's Alevi Neighborhoods

In this talk, drawing on an extensive field-work conducted in working-class neighborhood of Istanbul, which I have given the pseudonym of Narova, predominantly populated by Alevis, between 2010 and 2012 and in 2014, I discuss how youth engagement in petty crime and drug dealing effectively pave the way for depoliticization and militarization of the working class Alevi youth.

Focusing on the processes and relations that led to Narova youths’ engagement in extra-legal security practices/vigilantism and comparing this specific case with the experiences of the marginalized urban poor communities of the Global South and North, the paper will approach criminalization and militarization of the actually and/or potentially rebel-lious populations as a contemporary counter-insurgency technique.
