Constructions of Eternity in Latin American Deathscapes
Most societies and cultures imagine the hereafter as an eternal realm where whatever remains of us can dwell. The final destination of the dead body, in turn, is often the cemetery. Eternal grave rest is important in several religions. Cemeteries used to be designed for this. Yet in today’s cramped global cities final destinations have gotten an itinerary of their own, creating new temporalities and spatialities of bodies and souls. This lecture delves into the nature of time-space constructions in Latin American urban deathscapes based on ethnographic research in Bogotá, Medellín and Lima. The first part of the lecture explains how current dead disposal logistics in these cities produce temporalities, in which ‘eternity’ is no longer a leading notion. The second part discusses the role of pilgrimages and myths about folk saints as acts that aim to counter such logics and logistics through the construction of alternative memories, pasts, and temporalities. Changing meanings and notions of time - also connected to new digital options for memorialization - are discussed in the Latin American metropolitan context.
