Strategies and Tactics of Everyday Mobility: Women and Transport in the Oriente of Cali (Colombia)
In 2008 the new massive transport system of buses was established in the city of Cali (Colombia). The aim was not only to improve and integrate different modes of transport, but to generate a new citizenship culture based on civic behavior. This new symbolic order envisioned by state agents meant to differentiate between moral and immoral transportation practices. I consider, following Laurent Thévenot, that this differentiation is not so much a product of occult interests, but an honest position in the realm of the normative. However, the aim of my presentation is not only to show how this moral order was constituted, but how it has affected the ‘itinerant habitus’ of a group of women from a popular neighborhood in Cali, and how this group has readapted to and understands the new order of mobility. In other words, what are the strategies that inform the "mobility management" (Sven Kesselring) of these women.
