Dr. Rano Turaeva (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology)

Islam und Migration in Russia: Muslim Migrants in Moscow

The presentation will serve a forum to present findings of my fieldresearch conducted with migrants in Moscow, Russia. In this paper I would like to engage with the dynamics around and within mosques in Moscow taking spatial approach and to look how spaces are produced and reproduced within and outside mosques. I have come to learn about divisions into inside vs outside of mosques which became obvious to me after several visits, conversations and meetings with diverse people both men and women who worked in the mosques, outside mosques, visited mosques, served as a client for both services and products offered inside and outside the mosque. The main argument of the paper is that the division of spaces within Islam, where boundaries between formal and informal or authorised and un-authorised Islam are blurred, reproduce power and authority over Islam and Islamic norms.
