Mapping the US/Mexico and Mexico/Guatemala Borders: Survey Field Work and Archives in the late 19th century

This talk explores Porfirian Mexico’s border survey field work and its resulting archives. As visualization projects, international boundary surveys in the Americas constructed borders through a combination of cartographic, scientific, physical and photographic means. They strove to make abstract lines visible, marking national boundaries with obelisk-shaped monuments, astronomical calculations, two-dimensional maps, sketches and images. At times such efforts occurred concurrently. Alongside the laborers who erected monuments on the Guatemala-Mexico and U.S.-Mexico borders in the 1880s and 1890s, for example, photographers created glass plate negatives that contained their images. In the service of nation states and guided by professional scientific methods, the late 19th-century boundary field work did not always follow national and scientific scripts. To what extent did physical experiences, especially in border spaces, influence the visual products? How did the moments and processes of production influence the overlapping aesthetic objects—especially maps, photographs and monuments—that resulted from their labors?
