Fausto Ignatov, MA (LMU, RCC)

Development or Conservation? Expanding the "Extractive Frontier" in 21st Century Ecuador

The role of the exploitation of natural resources has been a fundamental element in the various approaches to the concept of development or the understanding of underdevelopment from a Latin American perspective in the second half of the last century. In this context “extractivism” arose as an umbrella concept for those economic activities based on the extraction of raw materials for the sole purpose of exporting them, adopting in the course of the last decades a powerful social and political connotation. But this approach to the concept of extractivism is only the tip of a much more profound analytical historical and (geo-)political iceberg spanning a series of conflicts (North vs. South, 'Man´ vs. Nature, among others). The history of the crude oil exploitation in the Ecuadorian Amazon basin (1972-) falls into this category and replicates much of the conflicts seen elsewhere, with some decisive distinctions. In this presentation I will shed a light upon this concept and the many conflicts that have shaped it by describing the Ecuadorian oil experience while addressing current sociological theoretical and methodological approaches to this kind of manifestation of the global capitalism.
