Slum tourism in Mexico City: violence and poverty as a tourist attraction
Transformations in tourism have triggered a development of new forms of tourisms from sustainable and responsible tourism to dark tourism. In recent years slum tourism has become a growing industry around the world, particularly in the cities of the global South. This sort of tourism involves commodification of poverty and violence into a tourist product. The presentation will analyse slum tourism at the intersection of responsible and dark tourism trends and it will focus on slum tours in one of the most notorious neighbourhoods of Mexico City, Tepito. While Tepito’s reputation rests largely on high rates of poverty, criminality and informal markets, residents like to emphasize barrios’ cultural production and its resistance practices. It is in the context of these competing narratives that tours to Tepito started to emerge. The presentation will explore the narratives around Tepito and analyse how tours to the neighbourhood capitalize on existing representations, how they reproduce or contest them. Presentation is based on the first fieldwork phase in Mexico City and is therefore still a work in progress.
