Anthropology at the Crossroads: the Indian Experience
In recent years anthropologists have explored many new areas in India. Gender studies, ecology and environment studies received utmost attention. A large number of publications in the 1980s and 1990s helped in giving popularity to gender and environmental studies. However, an overview of anthropological research work from the mid-twentieth century to date would show that some branches of the discipline have not received the kind of attention that they deserve; one such area is the anthropological study of the agrarian structure. In order to understand complexities of the agrarian structure we still rely on the studies conducted in the past. The good old days of anthropological research on agrarian structure are over.
There are other areas too that remained outside the 'mainstream anthropology'. What has led to this kind of situation? This paper critically examines this paradigm shift in anthropological studies in India, and raises questions for future research.
