Mobility, space and representations. Local responses to international lifestyle mobilities in Mexican host communities.
Lifestyle mobility is a growing worldwide phenomenon in which citizens of industrialized countries move to (mostly) less industrialized nations in their search –primarily- of, what they call, a better “quality of life”. These travellers cannot be defined as migrants neither as tourists since they keep travelling between their place of origin and destination living a transnational life. This Thursday I will present my ethnographic study which describes and analyses how original residents of two Mexican destinations have created a new form of tourism, which is illegal, subversive, and used as political tool to fight against effects of lifestyle migrations in these places. In sum, this presentation is about local responses to lifestyle mobilities, and explores topics like spatial representations and regimes of mobility.
