The Case of the Missing Octopus Spirit of the Lau Lagoon (Solomon Islands)
The Octopus Spirit is missing from the Lau Lagoon. This much is certain. The circumstances surrounding its disappearance, however, remain a mystery. Some accuse the late anthropologist Pierre Maranda of having stolen the spirit. Others claim the spirit went with Maranda to his home in Quebec City on its own accord. We recount the details of our investigation into this case and in doing so inquire into the transformation of an anthropologist into a mythical figure and how this reverberates through time. Through the course of our investigation we draw linkages to how this transformation resonates with broader struggles faced by the disappearing world of ancestral Lau ways of being in relation to rapid socio-cultural, economic and political change, and in particular in response to Christianization and continuing conflicts between representatives of different Christian denominations.
